Harbour Estates original owner, Fraser Mowat and his family have been involved with agriculture in the Niagara Peninsula for over 100 years. He is a fourth generation grower. His great grandfather came from Scotland in 1913, along with his grandfather, James Mowat, who was 13 years old at the time.

They settled initially in Grimsby, working for a local farmer and then eventually purchased two peach farms on Lincoln Avenue in Beamsville. That is where Fraser’s father, William Mowat, grew up. He purchased a 17 acre peach farm on Mountainview Road in Beamsville in 1952. Fraser attended the University of Guelph and graduated in 1980 with a B.Sc. in agriculture specializing in horticulture.

At that point in life, Fraser and Darlene were married and their first child Ken had arrived. Fraser and Darlene purchased this current 38 acre property which backs onto Jordan Harbour in partnership with Fraser’s parents, who had sold their farm, and they farmed peaches together for 20 years.

In 1997 Fraser and Darlene planted the first Merlot grapes near the back of the property. In 1999, Fraser’s parents retired, and Fraser and Darlene decided to plant the whole property out in grapes. They pulled out 30 acres of peaches and planted it out to Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Harbour’s first vintage of wine was in 1999 and in 2000, opened the doors as a winery. The winery has grown and as a result an expansion was added in 2017 for more production room as well as a new retail store and seasonal patio for dining!Jump forward to June 2022. The winery is still family owned but has changed ownership. The Ng family has purchased the winery and the Mowat family continue to operate it!

Fraser, Ken, Angela and Cassie all have a hand in the day to day running of Harbour Estates. Ken joined the winery in 2000 as the marketing manager, but his keen interest in wine production led him to become our winemaker in 2002. He gained his winemaking knowledge from Niagara College. His first wine released, a Riesling, won double gold in the USA. Ken has gone on to win countless national and international awards for his wines. Cassie joined the winery, followed not long after by Angela. Cassie is Harbour’s Assistant General Manager. Angela is the Finance Manager.

Our estate spans 38 scenic acres right on Jordan Harbour, a protected Class 1 wetland. With 1,800 feet of water frontage, our vineyard is surrounded by 6 acres of rare Carolinian forest, home to unique native trees and plants.

We grow our grapes in fertile sandy loam soil with a clay layer underneath—perfect for both drainage and water retention during dry seasons. Just 2,000 feet from Lake Ontario, our location benefits from the lake’s gentle climate, ideal for growing premium grapes.

We began our journey in 1999, converting a former peach packing barn into our first winery and retail space. As demand grew, so did we. In 2017, we completed a major expansion, increasing our facility from 3,000 to 14,000 sq. ft. This upgrade more than doubled our production and retail space and added on-site parking for over 20 cars and buses.

Our purpose-built facility now features streamlined production and increased harvest capacity, making our winemaking process more efficient than ever.

Located in the Creek Shores sub-appellation of the Niagara Peninsula, our vineyards were planted in 1999 with classic red Bordeaux varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Sitting 50 feet above Jordan Harbour and just minutes from Lake Ontario, our vines benefit from the lake’s natural climate moderation, helping to protect against spring frosts and harsh winter cold.

The Mowat family personally tends to every vine, ensuring we meet the high standards we set for our wines. By managing the vineyard ourselves, we’re able to let the grapes stay on the vine longer—developing deeper, more complex flavours. And since we vinify everything we grow, we maintain complete quality control from vine to bottle.
